I know exactly how he feels since the old technology PC I keep on hand
with its one ISA slot to allow me to employ an AWE64 Gold soundcard[1]
for digitising my analogue music collection (vinyl and reel to reel
tapes) which my wife uses, has been mysteriously finding the need to
check for FS consistency errors (and applying corrections) on a regular
basis which eventually culminates, after a week or so, in a BSOD.
The problem only seems to have arisen since I decided to firstly
utilise a PCI Promise RAID card
had too many problems with those to recommend them.
, then a Silicon Image SI3112A
SATA/IDEcombo adapter
I've used a dual SiI3112A adapter for years without any trouble at all,
but that wasn't in a machine with an ISA bus.
It looks like the only way I'm going to resolve the issue is to revert
back to a 120GB or smaller hard disk and eliminate the PCI adapter.
Do the FS consistency errors appear connected to using the soundcard?
If so, I'd suggest you're seeing interrupt contention between the
soundcard on the ISA bus and the PCI SATA card. You could chase this
for ages and not resolve it.
What's the board, cpu and chipset? If it's VIA, you have applied the
4-in-1 drivers?
How confident are you of the power supply?
I
only upgraded the disk to a larger one to try and improve performance,
but the gain, if any, is very slight and largely swallowed up by the
POST time being extended by the disk controller BIOS POST routines.
indeed. I wouldn't spend a great deal of time trying to diagnose this.
Just bung in the quickest 120GB drive you can find and take out the
SiI3112A.
