Hello everyone.
A friend's ex-wife's computer, an HP Pavilion, seems to have had its
PSU collapse, no power getting through to the mobo even though the
indicator green light on the back of the unit is lit.
I wonder - do these things have an idiosyncratic PSU or will a bog
standard unit fit? It isn't much of a machine, pretty basic, I am
awaiting the spec as there was too much dust/fluff inside it to find
any information and the documentation is currently unavailable, but if
they use non-standard units in all desktops, I won't risk connecting a
normal unit in the case. In case.
TIA for your time, sorry for the lack of information.
Strange lad.
First off, check what make of PSU it has. If it is a Bestec, *do not*
switch the machine on until the PSU has been replaced.
If it is a failed Bestec PSU, there is a good chance that many of the
components will already be toast.

Hi Chris
I know about bestec and it was the first thing I checked. It isn't, if
it had been I would have suggested a new box. As it is, if this thing
uses a PSU you have to get from HP, diminishing returns would dictate a
new box anyway, the rest of the kit is OK, tft monitor etc. I recall
Dell did the same sort of stuff a few years ago, to keep your custom and
MONEY, you had to buy spares/upgrades from them. Buggers.
Thanks for your help.
Strange lad.
OK, so maybe good news ;-)
Some Pavilions use non-standard PSU's with regard to form factor, but
AFAIK none of them have the non-standard electrical connection dreamt up
by Dell a few years ago.
If you can borrow any ATX PSU from another machine, it should be possible
to hook it up externally from the case just so you can test the rest of
the machine.
If it is a non-standard shape, pattern or used PSU's are often available
on eBay for not much more than a standard one would cost.
