A noisy 1Tb Samsung? Can't even hear the one I have, in fact the quiet fan
in the Antec extenal box I have it in is (by comparison) way louder
than the
Samsung.
Perhaps I've got an exceptional one or you have a rogue one.

This might help decide the matter:

I have four of these drives running 24/7 in my FreeNAS box and I can't
hear them, apart from a rather muted rattling (if I care to concentrate
on listening for the seek activity noise). The drives are tuned for
performance rather than quietness.

Mind you, it does help that they're mounted into an elderly Gateway
2000 desktop case sat on a shelf that I added to a cheap small office
desk that happens to be devoid of 120Hz (and harmonics) resonances. This
system is almost (but not quite) totally silent. The only time I can
detect what noise it does produce is in the dead of night when
everything else is switched off.

I purchased the drives in pairs with each purchase seperated by a 6
month interval. If I've just been very lucky to get four dead quiet
examples, what are the odds?

I think the issue with these (and other makes of drive) is the low
level of 120Hz spindle vibration getting magnified by case or desk
resonances. I bet the silencing of that noisy 1Tb Samsung involved
rubber mountings. I've used no such measures, they're all firmly bolted
to the case (two in the actual hard drive cage and the extra two to the
base of the case via MoBo brass standoffs).
