I hope you don't mind me asking this here, but my friend's son is doing
an
assignment on an IT course, and one of the questions asked is this:
"What general combinations of hardware and software offer very slow or
fast
transmission speeds?"

He's asked me for help but I'm not sure what it means, so any help would
be
greatly appreciated :-)

Thanks,
Craig

Well, Craig, I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but the best advice you can
offer your friend's son is (altogether now!) GIYF!!!

By and large, we're not inclined to volunteer answers to 'Homework
Questions', especially if they're disguised. In this case, you were at
least being upfront about it being a 'Homework Question', hence the
relatively civil response. ;-)

Thanks for your reply, John. I'd tell him to 'GIYF' if I knew what it
meant! Oh, unless you think I'm asking for myself because it's *my*
homework I'm asking about - LOL, I wish, I turn 49 this year :-)

I can understand it, obviously I don't post here, but I do visit the group
frequently and read the posts as I find it very informative and
interesting,
hence my asking the question here.

Cheers anyway,
Craig

I think this link should enlighten you regarding "GIYF"

<http://www.justfuckinggoogleit.com/>

The web page banner spells out the friendly expansion (but there is a
more aggressive interpretation, especially when the acronym is given as
"GIYF!" ;-)

The main problem with 'Homework Questions' is that the 'student' is
presenting a question here, that needs to be answered in the form of a
two or more page essay, in the hopes that someone else will be stupid
enough to do his homework for him.

Sometimes someone will respond with a subtly misleading, but
convincing, 'essay' to teach the 'student' 'A Darn Good Lesson' in the
benefit of doing his own research, rather than take the lazy option of
cribbing from someone elses work. However, that is very rare since any
such effort to show the student up for the lazy scoundrel that he is,
doesn't usually provide the amusing feedback required to motivate such a
response.

Considering the subject being studied, one could reasonably assume, in
this day and age, that the student in question is bound to have internet
access and the question you should be asking yourself, when you can't
provide the answer off the top of your head (i.e. the subject isn't in
your own field of special knowledge), is: "Why can't he do his own
research?",

Anyway, you can refer him to that link. It might be worth taking note
in case you need to refer others that, similarly, also ask you questions
in subjects that you don't have any expertise in.
