Yes, I have an NEC of that vintage too which still works fine, whereas a Samsung that I bought much later has failed. It's noticeable that the NEC is much heavier than recent drives I have handled. I suspect as far as DVD drives go they just don't build them like they used to.

I tend to think that Jaimie is prolly right as I cannot even use the cd
support disc from Plextor :(
Appreciate your thoughts though :)
Will wait to hear if Plextor feel its got any kind of warranty left etc

You have tried using a good disk cleaner?..
I have faith in tech to last a while.. My old NEC was purchased in 2002/2003
and it's still working as good as new so hopefully there's not much wrong
for you ;P
