Do I assume that it wasn't the bios or ram then. (see my previous post)

I have a Pc running xp that has crashed while installing sp3. I have triedI'm wondering if there's a virus that would cause this effect?
everything to boot it to no avail. When I try to repair it or reinstall XP
it won't have it and tells me; could not find file\1386\ntkrnimp.exe could
not be loaded, error code 7.
Does anyone know if I can repair this rather than reinstall as I have
lots of files on the HDD that I could do with keeping.
Steve
If you checked the Bios (loaded defaults?) and Ram ((clean contacts and
swap/eliminate boards if you have more than one)
and all is okay then it could still be a hardware issue.
A bad cpu, mobo or cable have apparently all been the cause of such a
message. Even cleaning out a dusty heatsink/fan which is causing
over-heating.
BUT..before all that it's more likely to be your CD player or the CD itself.
Do you have or can you borrow another disc and also replace the CD drive?
Yes a virus "could" do this but again much more likely to be CD related
especially if you can get to the Bios but then it immediately fails to boot.
If all else fails and you need to recover your data then I recommend using
Super Grub (can run froma floppy). It has never failed me once in booting up
a duff install.
