The ports on the "enhanced" controller should definitely be capable
of high speed - does WIndows complain when you plug the memory stick
into one of those?

Rob, Adrian: I get that message whenever I plug the memory stick into
either of the two top or the single front USB sockets. Haven't tried
the ones on the back yet.

Whenever I try to uninstall the 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host
Controller'

That doesn't look like the one with the problem, it's the separate
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller that looks like it's probably
running at full speed rather than high speed.

Thanks for your help Rob. Hope you can stick with me on this as I'm
floundering!

I can't comment on your specific question yet, as there are some more
fundamental mental blocks I need to resolve first.

I'm confused to begin with by trying to match the message and the
various views of Device Manager (with Universal Serial Bus Controllers
expanded) on the one hand, with the actual physical situation on the
other. For example, why does that message show 8 entries not 6 or 7,
and why are 6 of the 8 'Unused' when I have various things plugged
into them permanently?

(which sits at the top of that 'tree'), XP starts 'finding
new hardware' and re-installing, beeping and flashing throughout,
before I can get a chance to reboot. And usually delivers obscure
messages about some error having occurred. So I then close down and
restart. But slow USB mode still present.

Yet that 'USB Root Hub (8 ports)' is shown in bold, so I'm lost.

I don't see that in the Device Manager listing you posted.

It was the 'USB Root Hub (8 ports)' in the original screenshot
http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s247/terrypin999/Devices-1.jpg

Are you using an external USB hub?

Yes, it takes one of the 7 USB sockets listed below in my full list
below.

I checked back to my original order and spec of this MESH Xtreme FTS
Quad Pro, but there's no explicit mention of the USB ports. Even the
case diagrams are 'generic' and only the 4 ports on the back are
shown. In addition this has 2 on the top and 1 on the front (part of a
Mult-Function Card Reader Unit). That makes 7, so an additional puzzle
is why the message refers to 8?

Current usage of these is as follows:
Rear 4
- Epson Printer
- Logitech Wireless Keypad/Mouse
- Pocket PC cradle
- Epson scanner

Top 2
- Free
- 4-socket extension
-- 3D Navigator
-- Joystick
-- 120 GB external HD
-- Usually free, used for Canon digicam downloads

I would of course be happy to supply any other info or screenshots if
it helps anyone to diagnose the cause of this problem.

Meanwhile, I'm going to methodically step through any other tests I
can think of - although I'm running out of ideas, short of the
're-install chipset' suggestion.
