The ports on the "enhanced" controller should definitely be capable of
high speed - does WIndows complain when you plug the memory stick into
one of those?

Rob, Adrian: I get that message whenever I plug the memory stick into
either of the two top or the single front USB sockets. Haven't tried
the ones on the back yet.

Whenever I try to uninstall the 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host
Controller' (which sits at the top of that 'tree'), XP starts 'finding
new hardware' and re-installing, beeping and flashing throughout,
before I can get a chance to reboot. And usually delivers obscure
messages about some error having occurred. So I then close down and
restart. But slow USB mode still present.

Yet that 'USB Root Hub (8 ports)' is shown in bold, so I'm lost.

Have to go out so will get back into this early in the morning.
Probably just as well anyway, before I do something silly.

Maybe I will have to go down your chipset update path Rob.
