Once you've gone through all of this you would probably come to the conclusion that once you have root/admin rights you can do pretty much the equivalent in Linux or Vista
Naturally. Although in Vista I'm not sure there is any way to be an
actual user with System rights - Administrator is nowhere near the
same thing, just try killing off system processes when you're logged
in as one.
Huh? Right click on the process in task manager and choose
"End Process Tree". Always works for me (As a user with admin privs).
You can do it on remote boxes with
"taskkill.exe/S SYSTEM /U USERNAME /P PASSWORD /IM PROCESS"
To enable the built-in master administrator account open a command window with administrator privileges and use the command "net user administrator /active:yes"
To set the command prompt to run with administrator privileges by default right-click the command prompt short cut icon and choose "Properties" from the context menu. Click the "Advanced" button and check "Run as administrator". Click "OK". You will still get the UAC message when you open the command prompt if it's on but you can turn that off of course.
If you want ownership of a file which seems to resist admin rights use this command line string
"takeown /f file_name [/a] [/r]" as admin
Interesting to note that you didn't address most of the points I made relative to the security of Vista Vs Linux. I've restored your quote below:-
"This single-user, no-security-model legacy has been the primary cause
of all the *** that Windows takes. Too many bits of (legacy and
modern) software are running around expecting to be boss of the
system, so in order to keep the population happy MS has had to
continue to allow that sort of bad behavior even in the NT/w2k/XP
stream. Vista is slightly better locked down in 32bit, and a lot
better in 64bit. You can tell when security improves, because loads of
people get really pissy that their favourite software has stopped
working!"
Which is correct except that 32 bit Vista is *much* better hence the complaints as you say. Which raises the point that Linux dweeps correctly criticise earlier winvers for being insecure and then moan about Vista for not supporting legacy programs/hardware because of security issues. Which just goes to show that they probably have an agenda which has nothing to do with actualities. As an aside I don't like M$ either but facts are facts.
Maybe but you can't in Linux so I don't see what that's got to do with the price of roast beef.
on most you can even write bytes directly into memory with a very simple command line!
