I've been given a PC which won't boot. Worse than that, when you power
it up, nothing whatever appears on the monitor, and the monitor led -
which I take it indicates the presence of a signal - resolutely stays
CDamber instead of changing to green after a few seconds.
The components power up - the CPU fan spins, the HDD spins up and the
worth.drawer opens obligingly. Otherwise nothing. I tried reseating the
memory cards and the (sound) bios battery - still nothing. My crude
power supply tester shows voltages around what I'd expect.
I'm no hardware guru but I'd guess the motherboard (Asrock K7541GX) has
had it, and that any repair would cost more than this cheap PC is
videoAny thoughts? Anything worth trying?

If they added a video card to it they may have disabled the onboard
(guessing your talking about onboard video here as I cant be bother'd to
look up the unit).. If the onboard video has been disabled then you'll
need
jumpers to turn it back on, or reset the bios.
You don't use jumpers to control video, it's done in the BIOS. So do
explain
how he is going to do that when he can't get in to it! THINK.
You need not be able to start a computer to reset the BIOS.
You often turn off power, remove the battery, and short 2 jumpers. Some
motherboards are different but this is usually the case.
pci/agp/pci-expressIf it's an older unit then you could try sticking in a
whatever it'll take video card ;P (just make sure they are the same
voltages)
How would he tell they were the same voltages! You haven't a clue.
Some of the value boards (AsRock would have been made as a sub of Asus at
the time) came with the wrong keys on the female AGP Connector allowing a
3.3v card to be put into a 0.8/1.5v card slot. This could potentally damage
the motherbard and video card.
Why is it that I dont have a clue?..
Suggesting that he Reset the bios or change the jumpers (many new intel
boards still use jumpers) could fix it.
Or that the video card slot has been destroyed (if it's AGP and an incorrect
voltage card was put in/applied)..
I await your responce to show me up with bated breath.
