What's the hassle in doing the PSU fan?
PSUs may vary, but in general they're not made to be serviced, so
servicing isn't easy ... well, it's not especially difficult but it's
an order of magnitude worse than most PC dis/assembly jobs.
- The case may be held together with rivets rather than screws. You
/can/ drill them out and refix with self-tapping screws, but it's a
hassle.
- The cases tend to have sharp edges inside, as they're not intended to
be handled.
- The braids of wires inside the PSU will be held to the case with
cable ties, which you'll have to cut and replace.
- You'll probably need to strip the PSU down quite a long way to get to
the fan fixings and connections. Further than you'd hope or expect.
- The fan will be soldered not plugged-in. You may find it easier to
cut the leads close to the old fan and splice the new leads on than to
unsolder the old wires from the PCB and solder the new ones on.
It took me the best part of an hour to strip down and reassemble the
PSU whose fan I replaced (which, fortunately, was not riveted) and --
careful though I was -- I had little cuts and scratches all over my
hands at the end. When you can buy a good quality new PSU for £30-£40
it's just not worth the pain.
Maybe I should just replace the cheap'n'nasty drive caddies I have
instead... anyone do them with decent fans? (QuietPC
don't)
All cheap'n'nasty drive caddies seem to have cheap'n'nasty fans ... in
fact, most expensive and not too nasty drive caddies seem to have
cheap'n'nasty fans, too.
I use IcyBox (cheap and tolerable) caddies, and their cheap'n'nasty
fans seem to last as well as anyone's ...
1x Pentium 4 fan for Gericom laptop
That sounds quite specialist ... can you get one as a spare part
from the manufacturer?
Perhaps, but I think it's just a desktop P4 processor so I was
hoping the fan would be a generic slimline part.
Slimline desktop coolers are generally not nearly slimline enough for a
laptop ... and laptops have peculiar airflow requirements that a
generic cooler probably won't address. You'll have to take it apart and
see, I'm afraid.
Cheers,
Daniel.
