I've done all you said but I still cannot open the XP icon on the Vista
machine as it says I don't have the permission to.

HiCan you get it to work with a crossover network cable?
Just got a Hp Pc with Visat on it downstairs.
Have a pc with win xp pro on upstairs.
Have a speedtouch wireless modem/router and can get wireless
internet from HP Pc downstairs no problem.
However I cannot get a wireless network between the two pcs?
Anyone got any clues?
I have tried many things but to no avail. On the HP pc downstairs I
can see the icon for the pc upstairs but when I click on the icon
it gives me the error that I don't have permission to look at that
pc.
Do you have the same username and password on both machines?
ROFL, a crossover cable is not the way to go, that involves a bit of
IP address shenanigans, if he was up to that level, he probably
wouldnt need the advice....
a Friday night. At least I didn't ask if his domain controller needed
rebooting.. ;)
Not that I'd call assigning a couple of private IP addresses as being
"up to that level" - the OP didn't reply with, "What's a cross-over
network cable?"
Being able to find the necessary boxes on both vista and xp, and knowing
where to enter the ip addresses is several notches above the average....
When it comes to networking, routers are a god send, as long as both
computers can pick up the dhcp server (as both can access the net, they
can), then the need for manually entering ip addresses is non existant,
and the networking issue on his computer is 99% down to him not sharing
the files correctly, or not having the correct permissions.
