Well ...
I've blown away many precious boot floppies by plugging in the floppy
data cable upside down. I hate it when I do that....
Shortly before giving up on floppies entirely, I finally had a full
set of shrouded, keyed motherboard+floppy drive and a cable to match.
I recommend it!
That's fine, except for those floppy disk drives which have the notch
upside down! :-(
Crap, yes, that rings a bell - I remember shaving the key off a cable
once for the same reason...
I don't recall destroying any floppies that way though, the cable the
wrong way around just spins the drive up on boot, doesn't do any data
damage as far as I recall.
Doing that has killed a few boot floppies for me, so I guess it may
depend on the make of floppy drive. Thank gawd for boot CDs,
boot USB pendrives, virtual floppies and WinImage is all I can say! ;)
Not so much the make of drive, perhaps, so much as which end of the
cable is reversed. Having the controller (or perhaps both ends) reversed
is what wipes a floppy. Unlike the industry standard straight floppy
disk 34 wire cable which was used with a standard controller which would
allow up to four drives to be daisy chained, the bastardised IBM version
would only work if _both_ ends were correctly plugged in.
