Currently using a DFI Lanparty CX3200 socket 939 motherboard with an
Athlon 4200 X2 processor. I had 2 x 1 gig sticks of RAM in the
correct sockets to use the dual channels RAM cycle. Everything was
fine. Successfully used this rig with XP, Vista 32 bit, Win2000 etc.
Having decided to experiment with Vista 64-bit, I added two more
sticks of the same RAM (PC3200 - 400, low density), thinking this
would be a good idea with 64-bit Vista, to make full use of the
boards' potential.
First of all during the POST memory scan the motherboard only
registered 3 gig of RAM which I thought was a bit strange, so I
powered down and checked the seating of the RAM - all okay. Then
re-booted with still only 3 gig registered, so checked all the BIOS
settings to make sure there wasn't an obscure "32-bit" restriction
setting I missed (as 32 bit OS only recognises 3 gig even if 4 gig in
the unit), but I couldn't find anything. Also changed the sticks
around to check all were okay.
Having let the system boot up, then checked "control panel - system"
in Vista, which correctly reports "4 gig memory" - sigh of relief,
can live with this, BUT then in use start experiencing system
faults/crashes which are quite plainly due to memory read/write
errors.
Cutting this long story short, I have used "memtest86" to
painstakingly check every single stick in every separate socket, then
checked them in pairs and then in threes (which would give 3 gig of
memory, but in single-channel mode). Every stick passes the necessary
tests and every stick works with every other stick - until I put all
four in!
Baffled - any ideas anyone???

4gb seems to be a tricky combination for many chipsets, have you checked to see if a bios update exists??
Gaz
Hi Gaz -
Yes, very latest BIOS installed - only theory I have is there may be a BIOS setting wrongly configured I am missing - but I have been over them twice now. Only other thought is to check with the DFI Lanparty Forums.......
