Yes - that's where the drive has lost tracking and had to spin down in
order to get it's act together again.

I think your main problem is that you're using a fairly old DVD
burner. Mine only tend to last three years or so, which would put
yours towards the back end of its life. I don't know what it is that
goes wrong, whether the laser diode starts going feeble or the
tracking systems do, but optical disk burners just don't last that
many burns.

Thanks for the reply. It is a old burner but has never been used. The
original drive became faulty and they sent a replacement out. I then
discovered it was just dust on the lens (from decorating)so continued
using
the old drive up untill a month or two ago. So technically its only had
2
months use.

If memory serves me right the original unit produces the same kind of
burn
signature too.

That's that theory probably blown out of the water then!

What sort of results to you get at 16 speed - same sort of thing, with
the speed drops? How about 4 speed? If you still get those downspikes
at 4 speed, then your drive still isn't tracking properly.

If you don't get them at 4 speed, then perhaps there's some strange
system bottleneck. Does the cache stay full for the duration of a
burn? If so, then there's no bottleneck and it's definitely down to
the laser mechanism not managing to keep on track.

Tried again @ 4x, same dips in same places but roughly 1/3 the size. Also
tried a different brand, same dips, same places :/

I, like others have mentioned, always burn 8x and even 16x media at 4x. I
always use NEC and now Optiarc burners and unless there is some sort of
defect in the disc which you can normally visually see I never get a
coaster.

When burning at 4x I always get a momentary "blip" in the writing at
fairly regular intervals which would match up with the dips in your graph,
the write speed drops to say 3.6x for a few seconds then returns to
normal. It's never really bothered me and as I have four machines that do
the same thing I've always regarded it as normal. The discs always verify
after write and never have a problem in dvd rom drives or various dvd
players.

I'm thinking you either have bad media, although I always stick with Ritek
dyes myself or more likely your writer just doesn't like that particular
brand, I've also experienced this. I get good results with Traxdata discs
but crap results with Piodata ones for example.

When you say "crap copies" what exactly do you mean, it fails during
write, doesn't verify, doesn't play in a dvd rom or standalone dvd player?

I also tried a different ide controller (via pci card) and nothing changed.
I think your right to say maybe its the media. I think ive just always been
damn lucky with my media and always got fantastic burns and no coasters.
