I have a Dell 1520 running Vista that decided this morning it would boot

get the same problem.

Surprisingly, trying to boot to a command prompt also results in exactly
the same error.

Any ideas (besides a complete reinstall!) ?
can you boot to safe mode and run sfc /scannow? It may replace it with a
cached copy.

No, the error comes up in safe mode too. :-(

I really don't understand why I also get the error when trying to boot to
the command prompt. The startup recovery says everything is fine (which from
an OS point of view is true because the OS seems to be up and running).
