A replacement TFT is about £120- but I do not want to spend this if the
fault turns out to the the graphics card > TFT ribbon cable.
The tracts you mention, are these just curcuit board tracks that need
bridging? What would they become broken? I can understand the lid
movement introducing fatigue in the ribbon but static tracks?
I can only go by experience on a few of these lappys...
Getting a replacement panel should work fine for you as the PCB and RIBBON I
mention comes built onto the panel.. http://www.fps-europe.com/cof.jpg
should give you an example of the part I am talking about.. Over time the
pins on the bottom (they are soilder'd to a pcb) become worn and break.
This isnt something you can really fix as it's too small for DIY'ers to
really do.
I would say this.. if you "wiggle" the monitor around does the lines go
away?... My guess is that it's just broken joints at those soilder points
and nothing else, but due to the cost/hassle involved a new panel is
probably the way to go...
Another thing you might want to remember, is that the Video card tends to
send an output line up to the TFT, this line is usually the same as what you
might find on the back of the PC.. So the chances of the video card being
naff is really really really slim, Connect it up to a external monitor to
test!.
you could try (I have never used a service like this, so beware!!)
http://www.fps-europe.com/index.html and see if they could give you a idea
of what the fault "might" be and how much it could cost to repair. I have
had several TOS's all suffer from the problem I described earlier (Panels
are still good, as me pressing the contacts back against the pcb results in
a picture)..
HTH (and good luck)
