I have an Internet connection problem.
When I first turn on the above laptop a wireless connection is established with my router but when I launch my browser (Firefox) it says 'Looking up (any web page)' but the page cannot be found. The same thing happens if I use IE.
Now if I turn off the wireless network card and connect to the router with a cable websites are found instantly. If I now un-plug the cable and turn on the wireless card websites can now be found and everything remains OK until I restart the machine when the problem returns.
I CAN ping my ISP's primary and secondary DNS servers from the laptop but no web pages can be found until I swap my method of connection.
This means the default gateway is set up correctly, but if you try pinging e.g. google.com by name, you can test whether DNS resolution is working from a command line ping. This would help narrow it down to either a browser or a comms problem.
When I ping www.google.com from a command prompt I get:
'Ping request could not find host www.google.com'
I have tried specifying the DNS server addresses in the router set-up and in TCP/IP rather than having them assigned dynamically but the problem persists.
I have also flushed the DNS cache with no effect.
When I connect using a wireless connection on another (homebuilt) PC the connection works perfectly, this seems to suggest this is a DNS problem with the wireless side of the laptop and not a problem with the router.
Any help or suggestions with this problem would be appreciated.
Check the version of your router's firmware, and see if there is an update to it on the netgear website.
I have the latest Netgear firmware for my router
Try creating a new wireless connection in XP - the current one may be corrupt.
I do not know how to do this
Has it previously worked? Does it work on other networks?
Do you have a firewall enabled, if so, which one?
XP firewall only
Are there any proxies set up anywhere for firefox or IE?
No proxies that I know of
I am assuming that you have up to date anti-virus and anti malware scanning software and have run a full check, and XP is fully patched etc.
Yes
It's strange that when I swap to a wired and then back to a wireless connection the problem disappears and I CAN ping Google
I have also disabled wireless encryption but the problem persists.
