Re: remote management questions

hi

I am looking for a remote management solution, for 1-4 comps, but if
price is steep, maybe just one. Remote management as in as far as
seeing the BIOS. So, not VNC.

remote management cards (i.e. with RJ45 socket to go to ethernet port)
(I heard that some of these are a foot long, so I would need to know
what case is big enough!)

structural cabling - How much would it cost to get a pair of
sockets. One socket in the house, one in the garage ?

Below are some other options I am thinking of as possibilities, but
really in this post i'm focussing on the above.

KVM over mains (doesn't exist, does it?)
KVM over IP - KVM switch with RJ45 sockets(note- doesn't use comp's
ethernet ports). (It's a bit expensive)
CAT5 KVM Extender. (I have a rugged cat5 cable, but would need a DIY
job sanding under the doors to get it through the house. Would rather
not).

I looked into these things a couple of years ago, when I was trying to
make my server truly headless, without even a graphics card. Windows
Server 2003 supports this, and has some sort of telnet-like access when
using this mode.

You can find Dell's DRAC cards for peanuts on eBay, which is what me start
my quest, but I ended it when I realised that they only work with specific
Dell server motherboards.

eg.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-PowerEdge-Remote-Access-Card-DRAC-III-PCI-X_W0QQitemZ330263251562QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330263251562&_trkparms=72%3A1121%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I think HP has similar cards, IIRC.

Remembering a bit more about what I learned then, Dell's DRAC cards have
nothing to do with Windows Server 2003's headless server function, but
allows it in older versions and other OSs, that do not have this native
support. Also, I do not think that an ethernet KVM is going to work when
the machine is crashed. I do not really know anything about how those work,
and I do not remember how I came to that conclusion. I searched my previous
posts, but the only one that is directly applicable that I could find was
the reply I got for this one:
