Why 550Watts??

Well, I used two PSU wattage calcs and if I remember one
(www.journeysystems.com) came out at 500 watts factoring in some
possible future system expansion.

Everything except the CPU and video card is too high with that
calculator. I guess you could stack it up to 500W if you added a lot of
the minor components. In practise you need high-end SLI to get anywhere
near 500W.

If you provide the full spec I can give you pretty accurate values for
idle and loaded wattage.

Hello John,

I saw calcs that gave even higher estimates. So is there one that you
would trust? It seems not.
Okay I'll take you up on your kind offer.

MOBO = AsRock ConRoeXFire-eSATA2
CPU = Intel dual-core 6600MHz (may replace with higher spec later)
2x DDRII RAM (2GB) to be increased to 4GB
2x SATAii HDD 350GB each ST3320620AS
1x SATAii HDD 750GB Samsung HD753LJ (second to be added later)
HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B (to be replaced with BluRay later)
Optiarc DVD RW AD-5170A DVD/CD writer
FDD
Zip drive
SD/CF/MS etc card reader
4x USB PCI card
SCSI adapter PCI card
Radeon X1600 graphics card
RealTek HD audio card ??
2x USB + 2x FireWire card
8 USB in total
(4 of the USB slots are needed to provide volts to various devices)
3 fans

No doubt I have forgotten something. I am not a gamer but am getting more
and more into video and photo editing. Also this holds my large (300GB)
music collection and acts as the server around the house. Don't want to
split these jobs to another machine for various reasons.
Thanks

The orig was an EZCool.

The EZCool 550W PSU has a 12V line rated at 24A, which puts it
substantially below a typical 380W branded PSU. On the other hand, it
did blow up :-)

Ho ho :-(
Actually the dead one has 12v at 30amps emblazoned on its case.

But seriously are you saying that EZCool isn't a well respected make?
That brings me to my orig quesation. Whatever the size I need, what are
the better brands. I'd really appreciate that sort of opinion from all the
folk here who build so many of these things.
Cheers
Dave
Sorry forgot to add that I am also concerned that the mains here seems high
at 253vac. So definitely don't need anything that is sensitive to a bit of
overvolts.
