I'm not desperately keen on having Vista on a machine - having heard the horror stories about drivers & compatibility - what's your opinion on that ?

Horses for courses. Although I've heard a lot of reports about problems with Vista I would have been surprised not to, there are a lot of Vista installations out there.

If you are only going to run moderately recent and supported software on it then you are unlikely to have any major problems with it. If you want to use "legacy" hardware then you will have problems finding drivers.

It's a little slower than XP for some things, faster for others. If you can't spare the horsepower for the fancy graphic effects then turn them off.

Thanks for your comments.
No - I'm not fussed about fancy graphics - would rather have a PC that does things fast !

Trying to think about the software I use on a day-to-day basis..

PaintshopPro (V 10 - pre-vista)
MS Office 97 (yes - I know ! - but it does all that I need to - guess I could install OpenOffice instead)
Glasseye (stained glass design software) - people have reported problems with UAC (?) in Vista
Thunderbird & Firefox - both latest versions

No mention on Dell's site of supplying PCs with XP rather than Vista....
...not that I could see, anyway

Adrian
