I'm actually pondering the remote possibility that the XP CD I did

reinstall is the last resort.
This really is bizarre. The only thing I can think of to try next,
although it's time consuming, is (after making a backup clone) either
uninstalling everything possible or reinstalling Windows, then trying
with only one of the applications installed at a time.
Or maybe you could somehow get something like an MD5 sum from your XP CD
(it could be one of the applications corrupting something though, not
the Windows CD) and asking someone else to try it on a supposedly
identical disc. Have you got a vanilla copy? Or even try cleaning it
thoroughly and doing the MD5 sum before and after...
I've resigned myself to a full reinstall. I have the originals of all disks;
I always make and use copies. I will bin all my copies and make new ones.
I won't be doing it in the near future due to time restraints however.
Thanks to all who offered assistance.
