undeletable file

Windows Vista Home Premium

I noticed the other day that a failed download had left a zero byte
file behind, so I tried to get rid of it. Any attempt to delete the
file, however, fails with "Could not find this item". I've tried from
a command prompt run as administrator (same result), from Safe Mode
(same result) and from the Administrator logon (same result). I have
tried moving the other items in the directory elsewhere and deleting
the directory (same result).
Any ideas, or do I have to try to find a live CD with NTFS support?
