When you say the icons flicker, can you tell whether the whole screen in
that area (IYSWIM) flickers, or if it looks as if the icons are being
redrawn against the background? It might be a good idea to try different
backgrounds to see if it's easier to tell. ISTM you've just about
eliminated all the hardware and it must be software. What about a Linux
Live CD?
