OT: Download problem

Not sure where to post this, so I thought I would try here. I've just
spent all day downloading a training video for a course I am currently
doing. Some of the material is in pdf's, and some of it is video. When
I go to play the video, I get a blank screen (I've tried downloading
all the codecs I can find), and whereas the video is supposed to be in
45 min blocks, it plays for about 3 seconds.
The file size on one of them is 700mb, but it says that the size on
the disk (when I right click and go to properties) is only 293K. My
download log for bandwith in the last few hours shows that I have
downloaded more than 3gb, but of the 8 video files (different sizes),
they almost all do the same thing.
Short of downloading them again, is there any way to find out what
happened to them? I've emailed the college doing the course, but just
get the generic email back saying they will respond in 3 days, check
the FAQ, etc. I've got about 4 files left which should finish tonight,
but till they are down I dont know if they will work or not.
They have avi extensions, and I have tried media player, divx, vlc, to
name a few, and they either work or they dont. One of themin VLC comes
up with the error "the avi file is broken, seeking will not work
correctly". I click on repair and it just hangs the system (left it
for several hours and it does it).
Any help appreciated!
