Re: Installation Problem

My niece rang me up saying she couldn't get onto the internet on her PC
but the laptop was fine. She also mentioned that Antivirus 2008 was saying
there was 47 pieces of spyware on the PC but it needed activating as the
trial period was over. She brought it round, every time you tried to go to
a website it sent you off on a redirect. I download spybot & pctools but
neither would install. I installed Avast which ran on boot & tried to
disinfect the corrupted files but couldn't so one of the other options was
to delete the files, which I did, result Windoze wouldn't boot. So tried
to reinstall Windoze, system hangs, fdisk'd the drive, reformatted & tried
again, setup starts to load & then hangs again at prompt "Setup is
starting Windows" Anyone got any clues, been a while since I've had to
install Windoze & starting to struggle.

Cheers

Alan..

Hi Alan, as you've fdisked then you have eradicated all previous software
hassles, viri etc...

So, if the pc is hanging then you have a hardware problem, with the possible
exception of a faulty windows disk but that's easily excluded by looking at
it to see if it's damaged or a duff CD/DVD ROM drive at an outside bet.

OK, so it hangs so my first thought would be a memory problem, check it with
Memtest86. Actually, assuming you've not upgraded it in any way then that's
probably the only possibility. Suppose it could be locking through
overheating, give the heatsink a clean and the fans too. Unlikely, but
possibly the hard drive, give it a scan with the manufacturers checking
utility.

In any event I think your previous infection problem and the reload problem
are purely coincidental.

Pull any expansion cards it has and try again, it's possibly one has become
loose during transit, if they're not securely seated then they can throw up
some really peculiar problems. Reseat the memory while you're at it.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my heat ATM so see how you go
and let us know.
