A two computer system (Vista and XP) connecting to the net through a

I've never needed to use bittorrent but the occasion arose the other
day. So I installed the program (Bittorrent) and configured the
router accordingly, setting port forwarding and the firewall rules
for the new service (TCP and UDP, allow always and any server or
user).
Now, I've always been reasonably careful about security and it seems
to me that my system, as amended, is less secure than it was. Am I
right?

Yes; your current firewall protection is negligible.

Am I worrying unnecessarily? Can I do anything about it, apart
from resetting the firewall rules to block always when I'm not using
the program?

Geoff

Personally I use Limewire for bittorrent: Surely you should be able
to set your bittorrent client to use a certain port or set of ports
rather than upnp and all ports? (This is possible with Limewire.) If
you can set your bittorrent client to use a specified port or set of
ports than set the firewall rules accordingly for that port/those
ports only; thus vastly reducing the security risk.

Sorry, I thought I was clear enough. Only _one_ port has been
forwarded, the port which Bittorrent is set to use.

Geoff

My apologies if I missed something.

Then yes; logically your security level is less than before, although
hopefully only marginally so. - Having said that I've done the same before
and not picked up anything I didn't manually let in. My experience may be
limited though; others' opinions may differ - ?
