Aside from sending the disc in to someone like Odie is there any
software
free or otherwise which might be able to recover some of these files from
this disc.

Well it sort of depends on why the folders are unreadable because the
file system was burned incorrectly onto the disk or possibly some burn
error then software will be your solution. If it because of scratches
on the surface then you need to try and get rid of them. You could get
a CD re-surfacing kit or try the toothpaste trick. Here is the video
guide:

I've seen several websites that tested various substances, and showed that
[even smoker's] toothpaste has little or no effect, as it is not abrasive
enough. If it was, brushing your teeth would screw them up in no time.
Brasso is the best stuff to use, as it is abrasive, and it apparently melts
the plastic just enough to make it very smooth again, or something. It
certainly worked when I tried it, although it /may/ be responsible for a
couple of my most treasured music CDs shattering in fast CD-ROM drives.
