Aside from sending the disc in to someone like Odie is there any
software
free or otherwise which might be able to recover some of these files from
this disc.

Well it sort of depends on why the folders are unreadable because the
file system was burned incorrectly onto the disk or possibly some burn
error then software will be your solution. If it because of scratches
on the surface then you need to try and get rid of them. You could get
a CD re-surfacing kit or try the toothpaste trick. Here is the video
