Thanks for the above comments guys, but:

I've now tried two more utilities which also failed to work.
There must be something very wrong here. Brand new system - disc
reformatted - nothing but raw OSs installed - never seen the internet,
hence no virus. Six well known Boot Selectors have all failed to
work. Perhaps there is something wrong in the BIOS - but a cursory
look has revealed nothing.

Again any ideas welcome.
