Virtual machine help/info

Having previously toyed with dual boot Ubuntu and XP, I am looking
into using a virtual machine software to run on a dual core PC with
3Gb RAM. I really want to play around with Ubuntu and see if I can get
used to life without windows but I haven't got the space for two PCs
and the family need Windows for the time being.
I have had a look at wikipedia for info on VMs, I'm a little blow away
by the options. Can anyone point me in the direction of a basic guide
to installing and running VM and a easy to use distro.
XP will be the primary OS and Ubuntu secondary. On a day to day basis
the PC will be used for pretty basic stuff web/WP/Excel and at times
playing movies and occasional graphics editing using .Net Paint, never
games.
Thanks for your help.
