OK, chair pulled up, standing on top, rope around neck, getting

As I've already mentioned I slipstreamed several copies of XP (Home
and Pro) with SP3 for greater convenience in installation: As it
turned out this was far from convenient and more of a nightmare:

So the moral of this story is don't try to install a Realtek High
Definition Audio driver on a low-end Asus mobo with SP3 installed;
because you can't.

This may apply/help?

Microsoft Windows XP SP3 RC Does NOT Support High Definition Audio

SP3: More buggy than a Volkswagen Beetle left outside on a summer's
night with the windows open and an ultra-violet light on the back
seat.

One of the XP updates loads a patch for HD audio, if this hasn't been
downloaded you will get the problem with the driver. I don't think
it's included in SP2, as for SP3 I'll go with Adrian C on that.

Thanks for that - I was totally unaware of the issue. Clearly M$ haven't
bothered to fix it betwee the beta and the RTM version.

That being the case you'd think they'd at least notify people properly even
if they couldn't be bothered to fix it: They gave the impression that they'd
got all the bugs out of it.

Now does that mean that High Def Audio won't work at all under SP3 or just
that it won't install? ISTR installing SP3 on something with High Def Audio
already installed and the sound still worked...?...or was that a dream? 5
hours sleep in 3 days is doing me in.
