You are aware that it is now scanning for both viruses and spyware?

Duh, I have missed that bit!!

If you ran a scan for viruses with AVG 7.5, then for malware with
something like Spybot, the total time would be very similar IME.
The new version also hogs resources:
As I believe they say up north, "You don't get owt for nowt!"
Malware other than viruses has taken over as a bigger problem to most
users IMHO; it seems to me that to make a machine very slightly slower,
but virtually remove the need to spend a lot of time removing the crap
that the average user ends up with in under a year, is a good trade-off.
it takes priority over other running programmes. If, for example, there
is a download running, this process (say, the daily scheduled scan comes
on in the middle of it) will be markedly slowed down.
The only way a download will slow down is when the new definitions are
being downloaded. These files will be much bigger than those of 7.5
because they include both virus and spyware files. If a download slows
significantly when the scanning is taking place *after* downloading the
definition files, there is something wrong.

That's what I mean. Now then, adding the time spent on Spybot to it, the
total of 4½ h is still slow.

I've installed 8.0 on half a dozen machines, and not seen this yet. BTW,
it is possible to schedule the scan on a weekly basis if a daily scan is
too intrusive.
Also, its new design has made its use more tedious: results of scan used
to be right on your face, but now you have to click twice to get at them
(after a bit of tedious exploring, that is). Oh, I still have not found
out how to edit the update time.
Tools>Advanced Settings>Schedules lets you adjust every aspect of both
scanning and updating schedules.

Ah, got it now. Actually I did come through this myself but I must have got
confused mixing the update with the scanning times.

BTW, I didn't know where this was myself until I looked on your behalf.
It's taken me longer to type this than it did to find out how to do it.
You should have a look; there are configuration options here you might
like to try. One of the settings is the ability to adjust the scan process
priority.
The only 'advance' of the new is the checking of URLs you have just
clicked to visit. This is an addition to, and on top of, what is already
adequate in its core scan of the contents of the downloads. Useful or
counterproductive? This snails up the whole process, again!
I do feel the designer(s) of the new edition is inept. How can the basic
home window display not centered squarely on the screen be forgiven!
That's such a non-issue for me, I hadn't realised it did it until you
mentioned it!

It is insignificant until one is convinced that the whole package has been
ruined, and this irregularity now staring in your face has become the last
straw, excruciating verily!

For such a large software house (it boasts of 70 million users), it's
inexcusable.
If you think AVG 8.0 is such a poor product, perhaps you could advise what
you feel is a better one?

No, I'm still using AVG. This rant was to voice my frustration after years
of mostly trouble free patronage. Hopefully they will make improvement, the
sooner the better for all.

I regularly check out all the others that I am aware of; AVG still appears
to be the best free solution for the needs of those users that I install
it for. I really welcome the spyware aspect of 8.0, and am sure it will
save me lots of wasted time in the future.

BTW, on the Scheduled Scan page, i.e. the one showing the twirling
magnifying glass, what is Automatic Scan (under Additional Scan Settings...
at the bottom)? There are also other options: Fast Scan and Slow Scan.
What are they? A Fast Scan couldn't be skipping some checking items to save
time, could it? It just doesn't square with meticulous, exhaustive and
comprehensive checking for malware, viruses...etc. I couldn't locate any
clarification in Help.

What I do now is to click Pause to suspend the scanning whenever this
occurs while I am at my computer. I think this version of AVG is targeted
for muti-core processors. I am still yet to upgrade my mono-core.
