What do the experts here think about the optimum pagefile size and
location for my new XP Pro PC please. It has 4 GB RAM and two
(nominally)750 MB HDs, neither partitioned as yet. The default size
set is 2046 MB 'Total paging size for all drives' and is on C: (the OS
drive).
I've tried on many systems, and in general, a size of 1.5 to 2x
the installed RAM works nicely. If you can put it on a drive
other than the system one, even better.

HTH,
Ah, thanks Rob, that seems to crystallise my earlier view that I
should put it on I: (as I did on my old PC). However seems at odds
with Dean's point about a pagefile being needed on C:?

Hi Terry,

I think some does remain on the system drive. When you configure
the paging file(s), just set the one on that to the minimum Windows
allows and the main one on your other drive to be ~ twice your installed
RAM.
TBH, I doubt you'll see any noticeable speed increase however you
configure it, unless your working style is to have lots of application
open at the same time or you are editing large images (which take up
huge amounts of RAM.)
Just bear in mind that all you really want to do is avoid fragmentation
of the paging files and any configuration which does that is a good one. :)

Cheers,

Almost off-topic, but this is a useful utility which doesn't take much time to run and which I've seen speed up machines noticeably.
