What do the experts here think about the optimum pagefile size and
location for my new XP Pro PC please. It has 4 GB RAM and two
(nominally)750 MB HDs, neither partitioned as yet. The default size
set is 2046 MB 'Total paging size for all drives' and is on C: (the
OS drive).
Its best to let windows manage it that usually mean a max of 1.5x
the amount of ram. The constant writing and deleting of page files
is what fragments the drive. So being on its own partition of say 8
GB gives it plenty of room and avoids fragmenting the OS. Ideally it
should be on a separate physical drive to the OS. But its own
partition will help
Thanks. Meantime then, unless I make any partitions, are you
recommending I make it say 6 GB and put it on I:? Rather than let
Windows set it?
No Partition size 6 GB. page file will be what Windows wants it to
be. The 6 GB gives it room to expand if it needs to
6GB! That's a pamphlet file rather than a page file! But tolerance is always
a good thing.
