What do the experts here think about the optimum pagefile size and
location for my new XP Pro PC please. It has 4 GB RAM and two

set is 2046 MB 'Total paging size for all drives' and is on C: (the OS
drive).

I also have 4GB of RAM bought in anticipation of switching to a 64 bit OS.
However 3.5GB is available under windows XP 32 bit. I was considering
running without a pagefile and have done so successfully before with 2GB.

This time I chose to go with virtual memory. The reason being that, AIUI, a

drive.
OK. I was trying to make the point that virtual memory is needed and that
at least some of it must reside on the system partition.

So I have a large pagefile (dynamic, minmum size 2046MB) in a partition on a
seperate drive to the system drive and a 256MB fixed size pagefile on the
system drive. Pagefile on c: (to allow memory dumps) is static (to minimise
fragmentation) and small (to keep disk image size down).
Does that work, or does the pagefile on c: need to hold a full memory
dump?
You have a point there! I can't remember right now where I read it.
Wherever it was, I was convinced enough by to blindly follow it. Next thing
you'll know I'll be voting for Ken in tomorrows election ;-)

Do you actually back-up the pagefile ("to keep disk image size down)?
I have used cloning tools that didn't have the option to exclude the
pagefile, usually because they couldn't read ntfs and when I have used Ghost
I generally just image the partition complete anyway.
