Hi.
I'm thinking about swapping the system and cpu fan connections on my
motherboard - Foxconn 6150M2MA.
I have the latest BIOS and can enabled a BIOS SmartFan control for the
CPU but the system fan has no SmartFan control.
My CPU fan is nice n quiet and could run at full speed with no
SmartFan control if connected to the motherboard's system fan plug.
And my 'noisy when running' system fan could be connected to the
motherboard's cpu fan plug and only come on when cpu temp is high.
Both fans use the 3 pin connections so no problems there.
What does everyone(!!) think?
Is it a simple swap and is it a good idea?
Thanks.
Martin.
Do you actually need a sys fan? Why not disconnect it and check temps to see
if you really need it.
Hi all and thanks for the replies.
My BIOS has an option to shutdown the PC if CPU reaches a defined temp
- it not related to CPU fan speed so no problems with that.
I've been experimenting with various fixed value resistors and have
reduced system fan speed from over 3000rpm (noisy) to a quieter but
far from silent 2300 rpm.
I was in the electronic shop yesterday asking them what values might
reduce fan speed to 1000 to 1500 rpm and mentioned that 5v or 7v were
common mods to make.
The chap went off and returned with a voltage regulator - MC78T05CT -
outputs 5v and needs no external components:

I'm hoping that 5v will be enough to start the system fan from off...
And the question 'do i actually need a syatem fan?'
In practice most of the time it's not needed but running BOINC Manager
(Einstein@Home) - takes CPU usage to ongoing 100% - and my CPU temp
rockets to 65C and more. Tend to stop BOINC before temps get higher
than ? i think 69C was the hottest it got before i stopped it.
With the system fan reinstalled and spinning at 2300rpm i left
Einstein@Home searching for pulsars last night.
CPU temp averaged 49C all night. Was reseasonably quiet too!
I'll try the voltage regulator and hopefully be able to run the system
fan at 1000rpm or so and have the motherboard control the CPU fan
speed.
Might abandon my original idea of swapping CPU and system fan
connectors if the voltage regulator is effective.
Will post again with my results.
Martin.
