USB failures and consequential southbridge failures were a common problem
with some steppings of the i865 and i875, IIRC. I don't know if that's
your problem here.
Yes, ISTR the similar P4C800 mobo was particularly prone to (what was
assumed to be) static entering by way of a USB port and damaging the
SouthBridge, so maybe here, too.
There are/were some impressive pictures of burnt SB chips on the web.
