May be OT: Help requested for USB fault

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this request , but after
lurking here for a couple of months I know there's a lot of knowledge
assembled here.

Anyway , yesterday a friend rung me to say that he could no longer get
his PC to see his Lexmark printer , he had tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the drivers and a new USB cable but the PC wouldn't see
the printer at all.
He is in Toronto and I'm in the UK so I've had to do what I can over
remote control software. It turns out that the PC can't see his pen
drive either and when I checked device manager there was a problem
with his USB host controller ( the yellow splodge ). I told it to
update driver and the problem disappeared, but still no joy with any
USB device. I then uninstalled all his USB controllers and reinstalled
through the add hardware wizard . This hung at the finish screen and I
had to use task manager to close it , but when I checked device
manager all showed clear. Still no luck with USB.
I'm beginning to think maybe the host controller on the motherboard is
on the blink.

He's running a pentium 4 on an Asus P4P800-MX board.
Perhaps someone here has had something similar in the past ?
Any help / suggestions would be gratefully received

TIA

Pete Symonds
