Built a system about 18 months ago for the in-laws. Fine until about 3 weeks ago when father-in-law didn't realise PC was still running and switched the mains off, this killed the SATA hard drive stone dead. I pulled the drive and put it on a SATA>USB adapter thingy and it doesn't even spin up.

Note that this is extremely unusual - an HD should never fail like this unless the PSU has done something very bad, in which case it's not necessarily going to stop at the HD.
