So now I'm delighted to see all my data and setup files accessible on
the new PC. I now need to pause and decide carefully where to put
these. IOW, whether to roll-over and copy all these files to MS-named
subfolders in C:\Documents and Settings, or restore the structure I
have on my old PC, with folders like D:\Docs, D:\Movies, D:\My
Pictures, etc. Long pathnames on the one hand (but conforming to The
MS Way), or a familiar, intuitive structure on the other (but possibly
liable to cause the sort of hassle and conflict I've had occasionally
over the last 5 years).

It's very easy to move "My Documents" if you wish. You could make a folder
on your 'D' drive called, say, 'Data'. Then, in Explorer, right click on
"My Documents", select "Properties" and change what is in there to
"D:\Data", XP will offer to move existing contents for you - say yes and
"My Documents" will now point to "D:\Data" - all modern software will
honour this (some old stuff wasn't so good).

I was set to do that right away today. But a complication I've just
noticed is that MESH have set up XP Pro with their name 'Admin'. So my
initial data is currently configured to be in C:\Documents and
Settings\Admin\My Documents. (Containing only token sub-folders My
Music and My Pictures right now.)

I altered the name 'Admin' on my welcome login screen to 'Terry',
thinking it would duly change in Documents and Settings also, but no.
Is there some other way I can do it?

Also, C:\Documents and Settings contains two other sets of folders.
Apart from Admin there is:
All Users
Default User.
As a solo user, I've never been able to get my mind around this
profusion. I assume I can continue to ignore it, but does it affect
the steps to correctly/safely move all my data to D:\Docs, D:\Movies,
etc please?

Probably unrelated, but also, under My Computer > Properties > General
'Registered to', I see '..' for the name and '..' for the company,
followed by a longish alphanumeric code 76587-OEM-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. And I
cannot edit any of those.

I pine for the days when I could put anything anywhere, without
worrying if it would cause future aggravation ;-(
