It's a Gericom laptop, bought from Aldi years ago. I think it's a
badged Iwill model, I'll have to see if I can find some diagrams on

whole width of the case.
Mesh, eh? Best not thump it at all then. Oh well. Where's the fun in
that?

Most laptop video controllers share the main memory, so it would be
well worth reseating the memory module(s) to clear up a high resistance
intermittent contact which might be responding to heat (not necessarily
excessive heat).

Before you do this, it might be wise to run memtest86 first, especially
when it first starts showing the symptoms, in order to attempt to
de-mystify the actual problem.

If memtest throws memory errors and then stops doing so after reseating
the memory (and clearing the video problem), you can be pretty confident
you've at least identified, if not permanently fixed, the problem.

You can use an india rubber erasor to clean the module contacts before
reseating said module in and out of the slot a few times to establish a
low contact resistance once again. Such fixes can remain surprisingly
permanent so well worth trying.

Thanks fro the advice. I don't get much chance to run anything on the
computer just now. I did clean and reseat the memory but that didn't
do the trick. I looks like a complete strip-down at least. I'm hoping
that the video related fan has failed because replacement seems like
one of the easier possible solutions.
