My XBox is actually hooked up to a Dell 20" 16:10 monitor which happens

suppose it's possible they fitted really lousy circuitry on the TV
inputs.
They did, the SD scaler is pants. I use a 24" Dell 2405fpw, and
whether over composite or component an SD signal looks pretty ropy
(and not just because it generates very large pixels!). I have a Wii
and a PS2 generating SD content connected over component, which is
slightly better than over composite.
I've also got an Xbox360 hooked in via component, and that looks fine
when it's in HD modes.
