SATA, AHCI and Hot Swapping

Following the thread a while back about adding a SATA card I would like to try and get hot swapping to work on an eSATA connector.
I understand I need to switch the SATA port to AHCI mode and install the Intel iastor.* drivers (it's an ICH7 chipset).
I am a bit concerned that my shiny new Samsung 500GB HDs may stop working, or become corrupt if I do this. The PC boots from a PATA HD so I should be able to get into Windows (famous last words). Plan of action is:
Re-boot, go into BIOS, switch to AHCI (non RAID)
Hit F10 to save the settings and re-boot.
Install AHCI drivers.
Has anybody done this? Anybody tell me what to expect?
I could pull the cable of one of the SATA drives (one is a duplicate of the other) in case of problems. If I hit unsurmountable problems will I be able to back out of it?
I would like to give it a try but have to say I am a bit nervous. I remember from the bad old days that if you changed any of the HD parameters in the BIOS you would usually need to re-format before you could use the drive again.
