I will need to transfer most of the data on my present ageing PC (XPPull the HDD from your old machine, buy a cheap external HDD housing
Home under SP1) to my new one (XP Pro, SP2). Do I just need to buy a 5
metre USB to USB cable please?
you're shy of opening your new machine upThanks both. I've also just had another suggestion: buy a 'cat5e'
cable to connect my new PC to the existing router (which has 3 more
sockets).
I definitely don't want to have to get inside the new case. And I have
about 300 GB to transfer. I have a 120 GB external HD, so I suppose
that's another option, transferring in 3 steps. Although because I
have only USB1 not USB2 (the adapter I bought to upgrade to USB2 won't
work because I'm still on SP1), it's VERY slow!
Thats the best way by far.
afternoon that I realised it was an option.
What's the issue with SP1? - you only need to download SP2 update (along with 96 other updates I think) and you have the latest editionI had a Bad Experience (must be 2 years ago now) when I first tried,
with so many serious issues that I promptly reverted to SP1. For the
last year I've been half-heartedly intending to try again, but
motivation has never been very great. I saw/see little in it that I'd
regard as an improvement, apart from that one major exception I
mentioned - USB 2.0. The adapter card I installed ages ago turned out
to need SP2 to work.
And, of course, with my new PC at long last ordered, motivation is
virtually zero. But when I have the new one running reliably I may
well tackle it again, if only largely for the challenge!
You really should as your system is probably even more vulnerable tan most MS systems!
Why? I use the XP firewall, AVG resident virus protection, regular
scans with SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware 2007, twice-weekly housekeeping
with CCleaner and Glary Utilities (neither of which have ever found
anything other than trackers for the last 2 years), Firefox not IE,
and take nightly backups. Oh, and I throw a pinch of salt over my left
shoulder every night while facing west.
What would SP2 do for me, even if wasn't getting a new PC?
But then again - if you're happy then don't. Depends on your use dunnit!
Personally, I use internet banking all the time and if you read the T&C for some banks, there is an obligation placed upon you to update regularly and ensure your machine is adequately protected.
Interpret this how you wish but if you do get shafted for a few £K then best not give them anything to negate any online banking protection they offer.
