Pull the HDD from your old machine, buy a cheap external HDD housing
from eBay (or whatever) and plug it into your new one -easiest
method if you're shy of opening your new machine up

Thanks both. I've also just had another suggestion: buy a 'cat5e'
cable to connect my new PC to the existing router (which has 3 more
sockets).

I definitely don't want to have to get inside the new case. And I have
about 300 GB to transfer. I have a 120 GB external HD, so I suppose
that's another option, transferring in 3 steps. Although because I
have only USB1 not USB2 (the adapter I bought to upgrade to USB2 won't
work because I'm still on SP1), it's VERY slow!

Another suggestion:

Use the Files And Settings Transfer Wizard (FAST
Wizard)(Programs>Accessories>System Tools) to shift the data over an
ethernet network. First of all connect the cat5e cable between the ethernet
port of your old computer and the router, then network the 2 computers
together via the router using the Network Setup Wizard
(Programs>Accessories>Communication). Having set up the network run the FAST
Wizard and transfer data across. This method may take some time as firstly
your old computer has to find and compress all the data, storing it in the
place you told it to do so: I suggest that you store the compressed data on
your new computer. If you do this your old computer will also send the files
over the ethernet link via the router at between around 0.5 and 6 MB/s. You
will need to run the FAST Wiz on your new computer; and your new computer
will then ask you where you put the files transferred from your old
computer; decompress them, and set up your new computer very similar to your
old one.: expect this to take about a day. Most of the process is automated;
although a little user interaction is needed to run the FAST Wiz on the new
PC after the old one's done its work.

HTH

Many thanks. That sounds a very attractive method. Is there any merit
though in considering some sort of 'compromise', in which I would
simply copy across the bulk of my data (documents, photos, videos,
etc) directly, and only use the FAST Wizard for the 'settings' part?
Or would that invite confusion?
