Confused about router



NTL/Virgin > modem > 4 way cabled router > 3 computers running.

I thought - I think wrongly - that the main computer with the NTL
setup info had to be running for the others to work. Observation tells
me that this cant be right because as long as the modem > router is
switched on the comp upstairs works fine. So I must have got that
assumption wrong. As I intend to wipe the main comp clean and
reinstall XP will I have to re-run the NTL setup disk?
