Suspected Dodgy Supplied Office XP - Help!

About 18 months ago I bought a brand new boxed IBM Thinkcentre PC on ebay
that was advertised with Windows XP and Office XP installed. Arrived fine
and box looked like new and unopened. Worked fine too.
But now when I try to update Office on the Microsoft site it runs a piece of
software which tells me that the Office key is invalid. So I am wondering
how come that a new PC straight out of the box can have an invalid office
key. There seems to be no problems with Windows.
So I suspect the supplier who no longer trades on ebay. But how can a
supplier install just Office and get it activated without a valid key?
