So to recap on the benefits of "partitioning" a hard drive into

Interesting post.

I'm sure what you say is all true, but I'm not sure how big a speed
difference it makes in practical terms, especially if it's only
applications and not data that are allowed to "mix it" with the OS.

I fear the ease of maintenance argument is rather weakened by the whole
registry issue. If only MS had created a system registry (that could
live on drive C with the OS) and an applications registry (that we
could keep on drive D with the apps). It's really the (lack of) ease of
maintenance that's making me think, now, that separating OS and apps is
not such a useful idea after all.

Cheers,
Daniel.

I have System on C: and Programs on D: each time I have a cloning
session I clone both as a pair. That way they're both relatively small
and compact.

Usually, when I decide to restore, I only need to restore C: with
maybe a 10 minute twiddle on the existing D:\Programs to achieve
compatibility. If things have become too messy, I just restore both.

Compared with the agonies I used to go through in getting back to
functionality in the early Win 95 days, this is Nirvana, so I'll stick
with it and give thanks.
