Not all children are compulsive malware downloaders. If they are, XP user accounts offer no protection unless they're set to limited permissions, and some malware (maybe 10%, I'd say) will break through this anyway. A remarkably large proportion of software won't work on a limited user account.
A problem with the OP's plan is that a lot of malware is so badly written that it'll infect the C drive rather than the boot drive. Dual-boot setups are also risky to fix unless you know what you're doing.
